Taylor is inspired by a passion for nature and interest in complex emotions. This exhibit is inspired by life experiences and the nature of living in a human and feminine body while striving to embody the beauty of the natural world. Her paintings represent the unknown and are meant to provoke an emotional response; providing levity and comfort within difficult and dark moments. Skeletal figures explore themes of humility within a world that will be here long after us. Hopkins’ imagery places her subjects into a lonesome and unknown terrain. Using humor and implied sparse narratives, Hopkins examines themes both morbid and existential. More abstract paintings can be understood as “auras” which communicate to the viewer through use of color, composition, and brushstroke. The interpretation of these paintings is intentionally left up to the viewer. The figure pieces are intended to share the strength and power of femme bodies while embodying the  softness of womanhood.

more about the artist

Taylor grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountain area of Virginia, surrounded by farmland and wildlife.

From a young age Hopkins was inspired by nature and the way the natural world engages within itself. Starting off her artist journey from a young age of using poetry, charcoal, ink, pencil and photography. She enjoyed capturing the intimate textures of hay growing in a field or the way the form of a horse moves naturally through space, the way one of her childhood dogs looked peacefully over a pond.

Hopkins believes in using her life travels and experiences in creating pieces that may contain an uncomfortable depth. She encourages the viewer to take their time engaging with each piece and examine what emotional response may arise.

Hopkins relocated to Chicago from Richmond Virginia in 2022. She continues her artistic journey focusing on painting and illustrating.

Her most recent projects focus on the complexities of being a femme presenting person in todays day in age while encouraging individualism. The abstract pieces are emotional expressions, while the skeleton pieces focus on the morbid nature of human life within the context of the natural world.
